Spotlight: Senior Student-Athlete Molly Eversmann, Committed to NC State University

Q: When did you start playing volleyball?
A: I started playing volleyball competitively as a freshman . . . I didn’t really even know what club sports were and truly hadn’t been interested in sports at all when I was younger. I thought I was going to be a theatre kid; I loved musicals, singing, playing the guitar, acting, etc. It wasn’t until about 7th grade where they forced us to play sports that I realized how much I enjoyed athletics. I tried everything (soccer, polo, lacrosse, basketball, tennis, to name a few) and nothing quite fit until I found volleyball.

Q: Has collegiate athletics always been the goal?
A: In the beginning, I had no idea I wanted to play in college and really didn’t think it was a possibility because I started playing so late. Crazy to think that 14 years old is considered “late” when starting competitive sports . . . The beginning of my sophomore year was when I really decided that I loved volleyball enough to pursue it at a collegiate level. From there on out, everything was about getting recruited, playing at the highest level, competing at the best club, and getting into the best shape mentally and physically to compete in college.

Q: How did the pandemic affect this year's recruitment process?
A: Last March when covid came into our lives my junior year, I was still uncommitted and really freaked out. Most of my team had already committed to these big programs and I was terrified that it wouldn’t happen for me. In volleyball, sophomore/junior year is when it all is supposed to happen; the offers and commitments and excitement should all be wrapped up by the end of junior year and heading into senior year with one school locked down. It’s really early in the grand scheme of things. All of my tournaments and club practices were cancelled, I couldn’t go on visits or see schools in person, and overall I was just really at all loss for what to do. Everything being put on pause was really hard but it made me more creative with my recruitment. I started sending coaches videos of myself working out at home or a Q&A about me and my life, showing them my personality and allowing them to get to know me in a way separate from my athletic abilities.

Q: What are you most looking forward to in your college career?
A: I love my sport with my whole heart, it’s who I am. I love competing more than anything in the world and the thought of giving it up at one point is really terrifying. I can’t wait for college because I get to compete in a really strong conference with some of the best teams in the nation. My coaches have such a great vision for the program and I can’t wait to be a part of something as special as that. Also just going to a big school in a great location, like North Carolina State in Raleigh, was always something that I wanted regardless of volleyball.
