Pre-K Class Creates Animal 'Adoption Center'

Pre-Kindergarten teacher Kate Buettin started the day thinking she would read her class a story called Yoda, The Story of a Cat and His Kittens and then move on to the remainder of her lessons for the day. Her students, however, had a different plan. While reading the story, the Pre-Kindergarteners became concerned about how many dogs and kittens don’t have homes. That compassion and concern translated into a discussion among the class about what they could do to help.

The discussion about animals continued for a few days. You could see true empathy and compassion within them. So during free centers, the kids started drawing cats and dogs that were looking for kind people to give them a home and to love them, which is how we started our ‘adoption center.’ It was fun to see the lesson unfold - totally directed by the children,” Buettin said.

“This was a completely unplanned, unscripted lesson created by the children. You never know what kind of teachable moments can happen.”
