Human Systems Biology- June 2 – June 20 8:30-1:30 p.m. (Rising Seniors Only) Fee: $1400.00
Description:
This will be an asynchronous online course. You will be required to complete the daily activities, but they can be done at your own pace and at your own time. Please ensure you meet the time requirements for the daily quiz and our weekly phone calls; other than that, you are free to work at your own speed and convenience. The daily amount of work is equivalent to 8:30 am to 1:30 pm, plus homework assignments. You are expected to do coursework and assignments Monday-Thursday and speak with Dr. Pierman for a verbal quiz every Friday for the 3-week duration of this course. This course satisfies a graduation requirement and will aim to introduce students to the human body, emphasizing the systems of the body, how they are interrelated, and how those systems are affected by the choices individuals make. The pace of this course is rigorous and will cover anatomy, physiology, and mental and physical health topics. Other concepts covered will include medical terminology, insurance and physicians, and the 11 systems of the human body, primarily focusing on the nervous, circulatory, digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive systems. Dissections feature heavily in this course, and students must view and take notes and drawings for each. Students must also create organs and organ systems using the clay and model provided. There will be daily homework assignments, quizzes/tests each morning, one at-home experiment, and one at-home dissection. The final exam is based on a previously completed dissection by the teacher. If students have any underlying medical conditions that may cause nausea, fainting, or distress due to the dissections or discussions of blood and other medical-related conditions, please inform the teacher so appropriate preventive and precautionary measures may be taken.
Prerequisite: Biology
Intro to Computer Science
- June 2 – June 20 8:30-1:30p.m. (Entering grades 9-12) Fee: $1,200.00
Description: This 3 week Introduction to Computer Science class satisfies the Art and Innovation / Design credit required for graduation. This course will familiarize students with fundamental concepts in computer science, including problem-solving, computational reasoning, and algorithms. Students will begin to think about solving logical problems by programming in Scratch which is an interactive drag-and drop programming language. Using Scratch, students will learn to create simple animations while learning problem-solving skills and basic programming concepts. Students will also code utilizing a virtual robotic software as well as learn web design and create dynamic websites
Intro to Government
- June 2 – June 20 8:30-1:30p.m. (Entering grades 10-12) Fee: $1,200.00
Description: This 3 week course is an introduction to the basic principles and institutions of our government that examines theories of government, individual rights, elections, congress, the presidency, and the court system, as well as current events and issues. Students debate, discuss, analyze, research, and write with an eye toward being engaged citizens in a democracy.
Intro to Graphic Design
- June 2 – June 20 8:30-1:30p.m. (Entering grades 9-12) Fee: $1,200.00
Description:This 3 week course uses the computer as a medium of artistic expression. Students will utilize industry-standard software including Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign to complete each design challenge. Using the fundamental components of design theory as a guide, students create engaging graphics in a variety of presentation forms including illustrations, books, posters and portraits. Through the use of varied and engaging exercises, students learn page layout and composition, typesetting, line art illustration, and the use of digital photographs. A strong focus is placed on visual thinking and the clear communication of ideas. This class is a Bring Your Own Device format and students will use their own laptops. We do have 5 stations available on campus for those students without a device or laptop. Chromebooks are not compatible for this class.
* Introduction to Graphic Design satisfies either the Art / Innovation / Design credit required for graduation or a 1/2 credit toward the 1 year Fine Art credit.
Conceptual Physics
June 2rd – June 27th and July 7th-18th 8:30-1:30p.m. (Entering grades 9-12)
Fee: $2,400.00
Description: This 6 week course satisfies a science graduation requirement and presents a study of the theories and laws governing the interaction of matter, energy and the forces of nature. Subjects include measurements, kinematics, energy, power, sound, heat, wave characteristics, light, electricity, and magnetism. Demonstrations, laboratory exercises, and computer simulations allow exploration, amplification, and reinforcement of the course contents. Emphasis is placed on conceptual understanding rather than performing algorithmic computations. Prerequisite: must be a rising junior or senior who successfully completed Algebra II.
