Benjamin Theatre Company to Present 'Here There Are Blueberries' In Country First
The Benjamin School Theatre Company is excited to announce the presentation of the Pulitzer Prize drama finalist Here There Are Blueberries written by Moises Kaufman and Amanda Gronich. The school is the first high school in the country to be granted rights to perform this play and it will mark the first production of the play in Palm Beach County on Friday, November 7, at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, November 8, at 1:00 p.m. in Benjamin Hall.
Directed by upper school theatre director Jason Peck, the play, created by the Tectonic Theater Project, is set during World War II, and will turn the Benjamin Hall stage into a living archive of a photo album in the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum that features photos of Nazi SS officers and female staff relaxing, laughing, and eating blueberries - just yards from the gas chambers of Auschwitz.
“These weren’t secret photos. They were carefully curated images, taken by SS officer Karl Höcker himself. Here There Are Blueberries, created by the renowned Tectonic Theater Project, explores the ethical and emotional shock of that discovery: What do we do with images like these? What does it mean to witness joy on the edge of atrocity? And how do we reckon with the disturbing normalcy of those who commit great crimes,” a description of the play states.
Peck said the opportunity to bring the play to Benjamin's stage is an extraordinary honor.
"This play invites students and audiences to explore how history is remembered — and sometimes forgotten — through images, archives, and the people who create them. It tells the story of everyday life at the edge of atrocity and raises timeless questions about memory, responsibility, and what it means to bear witness. It encourages critical thinking, empathy, and moral reflection — all core to our mission and values at The Benjamin School. This isn’t just a performance; it’s a conversation. And I’m proud that our community is the first high school in the nation to engage with this powerful and thought-provoking work. For our students, it’s a powerful chance to connect with history in a way that feels personal, creative, and real," said Peck.
Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. A panel discussion with the audience will follow the 6:30 p.m. performance. Tickets will go on sale soon at thebenjaminschool.org.
