Upper School Play Wins Two Cappies

Students from The Benjamin School earned top honors at the annual Cappies Gala, taking home two awards for the school’s production of 'Here There Are Blueberries.'

Senior Sage Ponchock won for Best Leading Actor in a Play for her portrayal of historian Rebecca Erbelding, a role that anchored the emotionally complex production. The Benjamin Theatre Company’s stage management team also earned top recognition, winning Best Stage Management for their work coordinating the production’s technical elements and transitions.

The awards capped off a successful season for the company, which received nine Cappies nominations overall. Students were recognized not only for their performances on stage, but also for their contributions behind the scenes as technicians, designers and crew members.

"I am profoundly proud of every nominee, and of every artist, technician, designer, and crew member who built this production from the ground up. Their work, on stage and behind it, is the reason we were in that room at all," said Director of Theatre Jason Peck.

“In nearly 18 years of teaching, I can say without hesitation that Here There Are Blueberries is among the finest productions I have ever been associated with, professional or otherwise,” Peck said. “The way this company stepped into the weight of the material and met it as true artists is something I will carry with me for a long time.”
