13th Annual Cum Laude Induction Recognizes Top Scholars
The 13th annual Cum Laude Society Induction Ceremony in Benjamin Hall on April 14 recognized the upper school’s highest-achieving scholars.
As one of approximately 400 schools worldwide designated as a Cum Laude school, induction into the society is widely regarded as one of the post prestigious academic distinctions at the high school level. Modeled after the collegiate Phi Beta Kappa Society and founded in 1906, the Cum Laude Society recognizes outstanding scholastic achievement and intellectual curiosity.
Head of Upper School Fletcher Carr emphasized that academic excellence lies at the core of Benjamin’s mission, with induction into the Cum Laude Society representing the highest academic honor bestowed upon students.
The ceremony’s keynote address was delivered by History and Social Sciences Department Chair Graham Wik, who shared personal reflections on his own academic journey. Drawing from formative experiences in his childhood education, Wik highlighted key traits that contribute to success: curiosity, opportunity, excitement, challenge, perseverance, confidence, and ambition.
Through a series of anecdotes, including a memorable classroom moment that reignited his confidence in mathematics, Wik encouraged students to recognize the importance of resilience and the influence of mentors. He also underscored the role of educators in supporting students, noting that great teachers often ensure students succeed even when they doubt themselves.
Wik connected these themes to the broader educational experience at The Benjamin School, emphasizing the interdisciplinary nature of learning and its relevance to real-world achievements, including advancements in science and space exploration.
The ceremony concluded with the formal induction of seniors and juniors who received certificates, ribbons, and pins symbolizing their membership in the society.
