TBS Athletes Named PB County Players Of The Year

Benjamin teams and student-athletes were recognized for their exceptional work both on and off the field during the Palm Beach County High School Sports Awards June 1 at Kravis Center for the Performing Arts.

Andie Smith ‘22, who will be attending Duke University in the Fall, was named Girls Golfer of the Year. Athletes, according to the program, were selected for their role in “a movement to redefine competition for their sport.”

“These young ladies are paving the way, defying limits, and setting an example for future competitors in their field,” the program stated.

Senior Micah Mays was named Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Mays won an individual state title and was part of the boys State Championship team this season.

Athletic Director Ryan Smith ‘93 said the team - highlighted by Mays and CJ Bowens who took home individual state titles - achieved at the highest level this year becoming the school’s first track and field team to win the county meet, regional meet, and state championship.

The Sports Awards also recognized the team as Team of the Year. Great teams, they said, “put in the work to be exhaustively prepared, but are able to adjust for the unexpected challenges. They have proven they are winners. Through preparation, cohesion, and an intense desire to succeed, the Team of the Year has shown it knows how to handle pressure, dominate their sport and bring home championships.”

The 2022 USA Today High School Sports Awards, which showcase top student-athletes across the country, will be broadcast on July 31, 8PM EST on USA Today News.
