Fourth Grade Students Compete In STEM Challenge

Marti Lotman
Fourth grade students, led by Mr. Griffis and Ms. Boykin, took to the basketball courts the morning of October 13 to participate in a STEM challenge. The groups of three to four students headed outside with pipecleaners in hand. Their goal was to create the tallest freestanding structure possible.

“The students were challenged to create a free-standing tower using 40 pipe cleaners. The students enjoyed working in groups to solve this real-world problem. It is such a pleasure to see the students working collaboratively and using out of the box thinking. It gives every type of learner the chance to feel successful,” said Boykin.

Boykin said the project shows students that there is more than one solution to any real world problem.

All of the teams were able to make a free-standing structure, and the three winning teams were within just centimeters of one another.

Lower School students will continue to work on STEM projects throughout the year. Expansion on the Lower/Middle School campus includes plans to break ground on a STEM center this year.
