ADL Speaks To Middle School About Cyberbullying

Are you ready to be an ally? That was the question posed to Benjamin middle school students the morning of October 26. The question sprung from an Anti-Defamation League training organized by Head of Middle School Chuck Hagy on the topic of cyberbullying. The training was part of the Middle School’s commitment to maintaining their “No Place For Hate” designation, granted by the ADL.

The lecture discussed when and how to prevent cyberbullying. ADL spokesperson Caterina Rodriquez encouraged students to be kind and rise above cyberbullying, because it generally disarms the perpetrator.

“When you put something online it stays online,” she warned students. Rodriquez said there are many things you can do to combat cyberbullying, including confronting the situation and telling an adult if the target of bullying is being threatened or is in physical danger.

Most importantly, she said, is to stop cruelty in its tracks by refusing to perpetuate hateful speech by forwarding, laughing at or “liking” hurtful messages online.
