French

HAPPY EASTER – JOYEUSES PÂQUES - Malmaison  No homework over the long Easter weekend!

French Level A

Students are working in Lesson 7 of our Discovering French textbook. Next week, they will continue learning additional regular -ER verbs and expressions related to going to a party, including invitations, accepting invitations, and common party activities. Students will not have homework over the long Easter weekend.

French Level B
Students have started a new unit, Lesson 3A, on family, pets, and describing others. They will begin by reviewing family vocabulary learned in previous years before exploring the topic in greater depth. Students will also learn new regular and irregular adjectives to describe others, as well as important grammar concepts related to expressing possession with possessive adjectives.  Students will not have homework over the long Easter weekend.

French Level C 
Students have just begun Lesson 5B, a new unit focused on weather, asking for and giving weather forecasts, natural catastrophes, numbers above 100, and spelling-change verbs that Mme York refers to as “shoe verbs.” Students have already been introduced to the new vocabulary and will begin working with the new grammatical structures next week. Students will not have homework over the long Easter weekend.

French Level D (New Unit Preview)
Students have just started Lesson 7B, which continues our travel theme with a focus on reserving and staying in a hotel. They have been introduced to the new vocabulary and will begin learning new grammatical structures next week, including adverbs, adverb formation, the imperfect tense, and additional irregular verbs. Students will not have homework over the long Easter weekend.


Mandarin

This week in Chinese A, students continued with their unit on the family by practicing writing the characters from memory using the whiteboards game. Each day after our practice, we have devoted to preparing our big unit project. Each student will create a slide show featuring a three generation family tree and a separate page for each family member. Once they have everything ready, each student will make a presentation only in Chinese introducing their family members. This will be their test for Unit 6. We also began work on our new unit about addresses and talking about where we live. Next week we will continue studying the new vocabulary and grammar patterns and finish up our projects.

This week Chinese B students took their test for the unit on colors. Then they turned their full attention to their new unit about clothing. We played Kahoot to introduce the new vocabulary and practiced the new grammar patterns by describing the apparel in a slide show. Students also began their study of the etymology nd stroke order of the new characters. Next week we will add the flyswatter and cards games to our study of the new words and practice listening with the activities in our workbook.

This week in Chinese C, students finished their unit about shopping and bargaining with a test. Then they continued with their new unit about telling time. They studied the new vocabulary with Kahoot and the flyswatter and card games. They also practiced saying the time with a slide show full of clocks. In addition they studied the etymology and stroke order of the new characters. Next week the students will demonstrate mastery of the new words with a pictures quiz. They will do the listening exercises in the workbook and will start memorizing the new characters. They will also work on writing them.

This week in Chinese D our student continued her work on the unit about giving and receiving directions. She studied the new vocabulary with Kahoot and the flyswatter and cards games and practiced writing the characters as well. She also did the listening exercises in the workbook. In addition she continued reading our new graded reader about Qing Feng the “huli jing,” a person who can live both as a human and as a fox. Finally she took a pictures quiz to demonstrate mastery of the new words and turned her attention to memorizing the new characters. Next week we’ll continue with our book and play the drill games to study the new characters. We’ll also work the grammar exercises in the workbook.


Spanish

Spanish Level A:  Señora Rivas (Period G)
Spanish A students started the week with an introduction to the present tense of verbs ending in -er and -ir. They practiced writing sentences using pronouns and different -er and -ir ending verbs to show understanding of the singular and plural subject/verb agreement. They completed workbook activities to reinforce this lesson. In addition, they practiced their new vocabulary words plus the grammar lesson exercises during class which we reviewed together. Finally they completed a few online e-book activities to review and reinforce vocabulary and grammar lessons from Chapter 4.

Spanish Level B - Señora Rios (Periods A, B, C, F, and G)  
Students in Spanish B presented their skits in front of the class. The skit “at the doctor’s office” helped students practice protocols and basic communication used during a medical visit, including interactions with the medical assistance, the doctor and the pharmacist. In addition, students completed a short reading comprehension based on the book “El Periquillo Sarniento.” by the Mexican author José Joaquín Fernández de Lizardi. The reading comprehension summarizes one of Periquillo’s adventures. Following the reading comprehension, students discussed some of our Benjamin School values, including honesty, integrity, responsibility, and kindness.  

Spanish Level C - Señor Bernuy (Periods C, F, and G), Señora Rivas (Periods A,B,D, and E)
This week, Spanish C students created and completed their human body project that featured a favorite cartoon or fictional character and included parts of the body vocabulary words. Students also took a quiz on the Chapter 11.1 vocabulary. They received their new vocabulary packet and will practice their new words for Chapter 11.2. They also completed audio activities to reinforce vocabulary comprehension.  In addition, students participated in several interactive activities from Wordwall to review both reflexive verbs and parts of the body. 

Spanish Level D - Señor Bernuy (Periods A and E) 
This week, students in Spanish D focused on vocabulary related to electronic devices. They practiced new terms using interactive activities on Wordwall and completed 6.1 Vocabulario 1 homework through workbook exercises (pp. 6.3, 6.4, and 6.5). Students also reinforced their learning with an assigned Wayground Quiz and took Quiz 6.1 on Vocabulary 1. We then introduced 6.2 Vocabulario 2 using Wordwall slides and practiced through a variety of activities, including Wordwall, completing a vocabulary list, and working on I.S.E. p. 100 (Actividades 1–5), which included a listening component in exercise 1. Students also reviewed direct object pronouns (lo, la, los, las) with a Quick Start activity. They had a TPR activity in pairs where they had to give and follow instructions in Spanish to make a phone call, take a photo, and a selfie using a cellphone. Additionally, students began reading the Ahora magazine (pp. 2–5), where they answered comprehension questions and studied new vocabulary. This will support their work on the upcoming worksheets next week. Students should prepare for the Quiz 6.2 on Vocabulary 2 scheduled for 04/09.

Accelerated Spanish Level D - Señora Nappi (Period C) 
Students practiced hotel vocabulary by participating in short, unscripted dialogues as either the guest or hotel employee. On Tuesday, students completed a comprehensive quiz covering vocabulary and grammar. Thursday’s class was devoted to speaking and listening exercises. We will continue to work on new grammar and vocabulary ahead of a chapter test on Tuesday, April 14. 

Spanish Level E - Señora Nappi (Period G)
This week we practiced informal commands by navigating the map that Ona created. She wrote instructions to reach certain destinations and also followed directions to reach unknown destinations throughout the city. We will continue to practice commands and the use and placement of pronouns with commands. There will be a quiz covering the full chapter in two weeks.
